Comprehensive Language/Literacy Evaluation (Dyslexia Testing)
The purpose of the comprehensive literacy evaluation is to provide an in-depth description of your child’s current level of functioning in the following areas: phonological processing, single-word level reading, spelling, oral reading fluency, comprehension (reading and listening), vocabulary, written expression. Depending on the child’s age or ability, measures of print knowledge and sound/symbol knowledge and automaticity may also be administered. IQ and cognitive testing is not part of this evaluation.

A comprehensive literacy evaluation may take anywhere from 120 – 240 minutes, over multiple sessions. In addition to testing, feedback from parents will be gathered during an intake appointment, which includes information about medical, developmental, educational, and family history. After the testing is completed, the parent/guardian will be contacted to discuss the evaluation results. A comprehensive and confidential report will be provided to parents that outlines the child’s language and literacy profile in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as information about the measures used, strengths and needs, intervention and service recommendations, and school accommodation recommendations (if necessary).

Skills-Based Assessment in Reading
Skills-based assessment in reading focuses on specific reading skills essential for academic success. Dr. Truong may assess areas such as phonological processing, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency using norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tests such as the Gray Oral Reading Tests (GORT), Word Identification and Spelling Test (WIST), CORE Phonics Survey, Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST), or the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP-2). This targeted assessment helps identify particular skill gaps and provides insights into the areas where additional support may be required, guiding personalized instruction and intervention.

Early Childhood/Kindergarten Readiness Evaluation & Consultation
This evaluation focuses on the foundational skills necessary for a successful transition into kindergarten. Dr. Truong assesses early literacy skills, including letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and basic vocabulary; mathematics; oral language; as well as cognitive and social-emotional development. This assessment helps parents and educators understand the child's preparedness for the kindergarten curriculum and identify areas that may need further development. A parent interview, child observation, and teacher (if applicable) interview is included. A comprehension written report outlining the results and a parent consultation regarding next steps are provided.

Progress Monitoring in Reading
Progress monitoring tracks a student’s reading development over time, in an independent environment from their school. Dr. Truong can regularly assess reading skills to measure improvements, identify any ongoing difficulties, and offer recommendations regarding the effectiveness of intervention strategies or accommodations. The progress monitoring ensures that a student is on track with their reading goals and can receive timely support to address any emerging issues.

Early Childhood Language and Literacy Screening
Early screening helps in accessing appropriate resources and support, improving educational outcomes. The primary goal of screening is to identify children who may be at risk for challenges related to reading and language development. Screening is a preliminary step that helps determine whether further, more detailed evaluation is needed, and what kinds of interventions may be necessary. Using brief, validated, evidence-based literacy/language assessments, Dr. Truong can determine if there are indications of at-risk behaviors in oral language, reading, or writing.

A First Foundation's testing services are intended to outline your child's learning profile so that parents can be equipped to make confident decisions regarding intervention, schooling, or support at home. A parent consultation is included in all services. Services are tailored to individual needs and can range between $350 for a screening to $2,000 for a comprehensive evaluation.
